What Is Semax and How Does It Work
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide developed in Russia, derived from a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH 4-10) with the biologically active sequence modified and extended to improve stability. Unlike its parent hormone, Semax does not meaningfully activate the adrenal cortisol response - the fragment retains the ACTH sequence's neurological signaling activity while leaving out the portion responsible for adrenal stimulation.
Research interest centers on its effects on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) expression, both of which support neuron survival, synaptic plasticity, and repair processes. It is typically studied via intranasal administration, which allows direct access to the central nervous system and bypasses first-pass liver metabolism.
Research Dosing
Dosing below reflects ranges reported in published research and common research-protocol conventions, not personal medical guidance.
| Dose | Frequency | Route |
|---|---|---|
| 200–600mcg per dose | 1–3× daily | Intranasal |
Regulatory Status
Semax is not an FDA-approved drug in the United States. As of this writing (July 2026), Semax is scheduled for review by the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC) on July 24, 2026, alongside Epitalon and Emideltide (DSIP), regarding potential inclusion on the FDA's Section 503A Bulk Drug Substances List - the list of substances compounding pharmacies may legally use to prepare individualized prescriptions. This is a nomination-review process, not a drug-approval process, and advisory committee recommendations are non-binding on the FDA.
Verify before purchasing: The outcome of this review was not yet public as of this writing. A PCAC recommendation - in either direction - does not make Semax an FDA-approved drug, and inclusion on the 503A list (if it occurs) would only affect licensed compounding pharmacies, not general research-chemical sales. Check the current status directly with the FDA before drawing any conclusions about legality.
Research-grade Semax - including the product carried in the BioStackIQ shop - is sold as a research chemical for laboratory and research use only, not for human consumption, independent of how the PCAC review resolves. Consult a qualified healthcare provider before considering any peptide protocol.
What Research Shows
Semax has a multi-decade research history in Russia, including clinical use in ischemic stroke recovery, with research interest in the West centering on its effects on BDNF/NGF expression and neuroprotection in preclinical models. Human trial data outside Russian-language literature is more limited, and readers should weigh the evidence base accordingly.
